Hi, I’m afrikah.

I am a dramaturg, new play development & programs producer, and arts writer in Boston, MA, bringing new plays to life and building strong creative communities.

My Approach

Collaborative

I believe in the power of collaboration to create exceptional workshop presentations and theatrical experiences. As an extension of the artist and team, and a team player, I immerse myself in the vision and goals of a project. I work closely with you to develop a play or production that not only reflects your mission & values but fully engages audiences.

Bespoke

I value process over “product,“ focusing on the needs of both the artist and the play, and tailoring each experience based on the support needed to bring a project to life.

As a dramaturg and new play development producer, I utilize process to identify guiding stars, challenges, and moving at the speed of trust and transparency with collaborators and partners.

Thoughtful

I wholeheartedly lead with care as a cherished personal and professional value. I passionately strive to center accessibility, dismantle harmful practices, and discover humanistic ways of creating in a post-pandemic world.

Advocate for Care

Each new play development process is guided by the value of care not only for the playwright, but also for collaborators and audiences.

3+ Years of New Play Development Experience

As the inaugural New Work Producer at Company One Theatre, I have produced new plays in development that have continued their development or have had their world/Boston premiere.

Nationally Recognized Theatremaker

I am an alum of the Theatre Communications Group's Rising Leaders of Color and the National New Play Network's Producer in Residence Fellowships.

HOOPS by Eliana Pipes

production dramaturgy; Boston premiere

Hoop earrings are way more than just an accessory. They represent family, resilience, and self-expression. They represent the freedom to shine in a world that’s constantly trying to dim the lights. From Chicago to Oaxaca to right here in Boston, these earrings shout “I’m here, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Eliana Pipes brings 5,000 years of history to life with Hoops, a joyous celebration of Black, Latine, and Indigenous culture. Based on a series of intimate interviews, this vibrant and playful choreopoem-esque collage of self-adornment and heritage shows off just how much power a pair of hoops can hold.

Haunted by Tara Moses

workshop development (in partnership with Tufts University Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies)

A satirical horror story with ghosts, divination, and 2000s pop music, Haunted serves as a vehicle for a larger conversation on the Land Back movement and invites theaters and audience members to engage with their relationship (or lack thereof) to local Indigenous communities.

Mia just wants her daughter to listen without talking back. Dailyn just wants her mom to quit being so judgemental. And they both just want everything to be perfect for when older sister Alex comes home for her birthday. But when a mysterious visitor from a digital dimension arrives on Mia’s doorstep, the very concepts of home and perfection are challenged.

Reality and social media blur together in the newest play from Boston’s own master playwright Kirsten Greenidge. An eccentric reflection of post-pandemic life, Morning, Noon, and Night navigates familial reckoning, digital surveillance, and the ways we can love each other after four long and traumatic years.
